TERP Module
Run a practice around the matter — with the conflict check before you take it and the limitation date in front of you every morning.
A firm does not have clients, it has matters: one engagement for one client, with its court, its case number, its team and its dates. Everything hangs off it — hearings, tasks, documents, recorded time and the bill. Two things the software treats as more important than anything else, because getting them wrong is negligence rather than inconvenience: the limitation date, which leads the dashboard ninety days out, and the conflict check, which searches every client you have acted for AND every party you have acted against before a matter is opened. It suggests and records; it does not decide, because software cannot know that two people called Perera are different people. Time is recorded in your own billing units with the rate frozen at the moment it was recorded, so changing a rate never reprices work already done. Bills carry disbursements untaxed — a court fee you paid on a client's behalf is not a service you sold — and the invoice lands on the same ledger and the same receivables ageing as every other part of the business.
Key features
See it in action
A new client walks in. Before the matter is opened, the conflict check searches every client the firm has acted for and every party it has acted against — the opposing party turns out to be a former client, and a partner decides, on the record, whether to take it.
The matter is opened with its court, its case number and its limitation date. A junior is put on the team; the file is marked restricted, so nobody else in the firm can open it.
The case is called, mentioned and adjourned four times over eight months. Each calling records what happened and lists the next date, so the history is there when the client asks why it is taking so long.
Time is recorded as it is spent and court fees as they are paid. The bill goes out: fees less a write-off, tax on the fees only, the court fees recharged untaxed — and the invoice appears on the client statement beside everything else the business does.
Try it yourself
Set the practice up from Legal -> Practice Areas, Courts and Lawyers & Staff — the dashboard shows the three steps and ticks them off. Then open a matter and press Check for conflicts. Link each lawyer to their login on Lawyers & Staff before testing restricted matters, or the gate cannot recognise them.
